Concrete Grade Guide
Concrete strength is measured in Newtons (N/mm²) after 28 days of curing. Below is a guide to the most common mix specifications we deliver across Watford:

Fiber-Reinforced Concrete
We add polypropylene micro-fibers directly into the mixing auger. These fibers distribute evenly throughout the mix, preventing shrinkage cracks and improving impact resistance without the need for steel mesh in light slabs.
Plasticisers & Retarders
For hot summer pours or complex pump setups, we add retarders to slow setting times. Plasticisers can be added to improve workability and slump class without adding excess water (which weakens the concrete).
What is Concrete Slump?
Slump indicates the consistency and workability of wet concrete. Slump classes range from S1 (very dry, semi-dry mixes) up to S4/S5 (highly fluid concrete, ideal for pumping). Our volumetric mixing trucks can adjust the slump on-site. If you need a stiffer mix for a slope, and then a wetter, self-levelling mix for a slab, we can alter the water-to-cement ratio instantly.
Pro-Tip: Curing Your Concrete
Concrete does not dry; it cures through a chemical reaction (hydration). Keep your fresh concrete damp by misting it with water or covering it with polythene sheets for the first 3 to 7 days. This prevents the surface from cracking and helps the concrete reach its maximum design strength.
